"What has been done in recent
years is a process of reconciliation between Italy and the
former Yugoslavia," said Luca Ciriani, Minister for Relations
with Parliament, following the awarding of honorary degrees to
Mattarella and Pahor.
We had the peace concert in 2010, President Mattarella and
President Pahor visited Basovizza in 2020, and both were awarded
honorary degrees here in Trieste today. It is a complex journey
that we celebrate with joy today and encourages us to look
ahead," he added. "However, I also want to interpret it,
believing not to make mistakes, it is also a recognition to the
many in this city, in our region, and throughout Italy who have
kept alive the memory of the Istrian and Dalmatian exodus, of
the foibe, of the dead, incessantly remembering this tragedy
while many were silent and pretended not to know."
