(ANSA) - BELGRADE, MAR 1 - A new report from SeeNext says that in the five EU member states of Southeast Europe (Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Romania, and Slovenia), renewable energy has been the fastest-growing part of the energy industry and is about to reach new heights.

The total installed capacity of the renewables sector in the five countries was 32,169 MW in 2021, according to the 'SEE Renewable Energy Report,' with hydropower plants accounting for more than half of the region's renewable capacity, followed by wind farms with 9,165 MW, photovoltaic plants with 6,589 MW, biomass and biogas power plants with 525 MW, and geothermal facilities with 10 MW.

In 2021, the renewable energy sector in SEE generated aggregate operating revenue of EUR 12.9 billion, a 30% increase year on year, owing to rising electricity prices and increased demand for alternative energy.

According to the report, Italy was the most important source of investment in renewables in the region, accounting for 16% of all foreign-owned companies in the sector. (ANSA).
