Italy has started an unprecedented
procedure with the EU over Austria's blocking the Brenner Pass
to heavy goods traffic, Transport Minister and Deputy Premier
Matteo Salvini said Wednesday.
"We have decided for the first time in history to formally
activate the procedure envisaged by article 259 of the EU's
founding treaty," he said.
"Austria's unilateral bans are unacceptable and unsustainable
because they block the main axis of connection between southern
and northern Europe and we are also faced with the multi-year
inertia of the European Commission, which is disgraceful after
four years waiting for a negotiated solution which has not
arrived."
He said the first hearing was scheduled for April 8 at the EU.
