Ports: agreement signed on Trieste-Austria customs corridor

ADM, a unique project to speed up the cargo transit process.

(ANSA) - TRIESTE, 01 DIC - An operational protocol to start up the rail-customs corridor between the Port of Trieste and Fürnitz Freight Village in Austria was signed today in Vienna by the Excise, Customs and Monopolies (ADM) agency, the Port Network Authority of the Eastern Adriatic Sea (Ports of Trieste and Monfalcone) and Austrian Customs.

A statement from the ADM reported that the agreement marks the beginning of "a unique project" in Europe. The plan will speed up the transit process of goods from all over the world into the EU and transfer by rail an increasing number of containers landing at the Port of Trieste on their way to Austria and other Central European countries.

The signing took place in the presence of, among others, the heads of the Austrian Ministry of Finance and Customs, Italy's ambassador to Austria, Stefano Beltrame, the president of the Ports of Trieste and Monfalcone, Zeno D'Agostino, and ADM's interregional director for Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia, Davide Bellosi. The cooperation plan between Italy and Austria will speed up procedures for goods arriving at Trieste's Pier VII and are then forwarded to the Fürnitz Freight Village.

Customs paperwork will be carried out directly at the Austrian customs in Villach; only the preventive check on the safety of the goods will be carried out in Trieste. The statement underlines the corridor is, therefore, framed as "a further opportunity to simplify intermodality, cutting down customs clearance time" and aims at a "lower environmental impact of freight transport."
