(ANSA-AFP) - ROME, SEP 20 - EU budget rules must not be
obtuse, President Sergio Mattarella told visiting German
President Walter Steinmeier in Sicily Wednesday. "We must agree
on the proposal for shared rules on the EU budget. Yes to strict
budgetary rules, but austerity should not be obtuse and blind,
but aimed at growth, taking into account phenomena such as the
slowdown of the Chinese economy and the consequences of the war
in Ukraine," said the Italian head of State. "The European
budget must be ambitious to tackle fundamental challenges such
as the ecological and digital transition." (ANSA-AFP).
