Over 72,000 asylum seekers in the EU in April 2023

A 34 % increase

(ANSA) - BELGRADE, JUL 25 - According to Eurostat, 72,630 first-time asylum seekers from non-EU countries applied for international protection in EU states in April 2023. This represents a 34% increase over April 2022 (54,350). There were also 5 310 second-time applicants, a 5% decrease from April 2022 (5,610). Syrians were the largest group of people seeking asylum in April 2023, as they had been in previous months. Germany received the most first-time asylum applicants (20,950), followed by Spain (12,910), France (10,260), and Italy (8,175), accounting for nearly three-quarters (72%) of all first-time applicants in the EU.
