(ANSA) - ROME, SEP 19 - Separating the career paths of
Italian judges and prosecutors so they can longer move between
the roles is a non-negotiable part of the government's justice
reform package, Justice Minister Carlo Nordio said Tuesday.
The Italian magistrates union, ANM, has said the move is the
thin end of the wedge towards bringing the judiciary under
government control, a claim former prosecutor Nordio vehemently
denies.
'"The separation of careers is not negotiable," said Nordio,
during an event on simplification being held at Hadrian's
Temple.
"It is in the government programme, it was agreed by all the
coalition forces.
"It must be implemented out of respect for the citizens who
voted for us. It is then linked to the accusatory process.
"If we implement the accusatory process, we must also implement
the separation of careers otherwise we have a Ferrari with the
engine of a Cinquecento.
"It will not be in the short term because it presupposes a
constitutional revision if it is to be done well". (ANSA).
