Another quake rocks Campi Flegrei

Another quake rocks Campi Flegrei

Second night outdoors for many locals in volcanic caldera zone

ROME, 22 May 2024, 10:29

ANSA English Desk

The area of the Campi Flegrei volcanic caldera near Naples was rocked by 3.4-magnitude earthquake on Wednesday as the swarm of seismic activity that started in the zone on Monday continued.
The quake, which took place at 8:28 at a depth of around four kilometres, according to the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), could be clearly felt in many districts of Naples and in several towns in the area.
Many locals spent a second night outdoors because of the flurry of quakes, including a 4.4 magnitude one that was the strongest to hit the area over 40 years.
So far 46 families have been evacuated from their homes in 27 buildings after inspections were done on structures in the area.
The 138 inmates of Pozzuoli's women's prison have been evacuated too and temporarily transferred to other jails in Campania.
Premier Giorgia Meloni on Wednesday is chairing an inter-ministerial meeting on the situation.
The Campi Flegrei area, also known the Phlegrean Fields in English, is currently affected by bradyseism, or ground uplift, and the seismic activity in the volcanic zone has led to fears of harm to people and property.
