Deputy Premier, Transport and Infrastructure Minister and leader of the right-wing League party Matteo Salvini said Saturday that the issue of recognizing the children of same-sex couples is "not a priority", adding that Italians are asking him "for something else".
"For me it is sufficient that children have the same rights as everyone else: mummy is mummy and daddy is daddy, the issues concerning bureaucracy are to be resolved by the bureaucrats," said Salvini on the sidelines of the youth wing assembly of the national association of Italian municipalities in Treviso.
"Let me just say that it is a topic that some journalists are very passionate about," he added.
However, "Italians are asking me for something else, it is not a priority.
"In any case, there are no children without ID cards," concluded Salvini.
On Tuesday European Justice Commissioner Didier Reynders said that European Union member countries are required by EU law to recognise the children of same-sex couples, a law Italy's right-wing government is opposing.
Milan municipal authorities recently had to stop registering the children of same-sex couples after ruling right-wing parties voted against their recognition in the Senate.
The issue is closely linked to that of surrogacy, a very hot topic in Italy at the moment.
