Pope Francis said Wednesday he hoped the World Cup in Qatar would be a chance for harmony among nations.
"I wish to send my greetings to the players, fans and spectators who are following the world football championships taking place in Qatar from various continents," Francis said at the end of his weekly general audience in the Vatican.
"May this important event be an occasion of meeting and harmony among nations, favouring fraternity and peace among peoples".
